The Beauty Of Mijas Pueblo

By in Articles with 0 Comments

Mijas Pueblo is probably the most beautiful whitewashed village in the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. It is tucked up high on the side of a mountain at nearly 1,500 feet above sea level and has incredible views over the Costa del Sol. In fact, on a clear day you can make out the shapes of the mountains in Morocco across the Mediterranean.

Built on the side of a mountain as it is, Mijas is divided into two halves, an upper half and a lower half which are separated by the main square, the Plaza Virgen de la Pena. There are narrow streets with whitewashed houses, many with blue flowerpots full of flowers all year round, that are stepped for easy climbing up the hill.

There are some lovely places to eat in Mijas, such as La Boveda Del Flamenco which has a white wall decorated with the ever-present blue flowerpots – lots of them. It boasts vintage wrought iron chairs, blue umbrellas, and red tablecloths, and is the perfect place for breakfast which includes the speciality the ham and cheese tostada. It is also an ideal place to have a drink in the afternoon as you can people-watch. You would never know it, but this café used to be the old town jail.

The Secret Garden is a great place for tapas in Mijas. Outside, it doesn’t look up to much – just a café with a few chairs, but if you go inside and head towards the small white door you will then find yourself in the secret garden itself with chairs and table set on pebbles surrounded by green shrubs and olive and orange trees. They provide a very good home-made sangria which is sweet and full of fruits.

Restaurant Triana is also recommended. It has a fantastic terrace that overlooks the main square and has very good tapas, offering meat, fish, vegetarian, and mixed.

There are lots of things to do in Mijas Pueblo, not the least of which is a ride in the donkey taxis, which are a rarity in Spain these days.

This is a great town for tourists and a great place for an overseas property investment as a result. At BeckettHanlon we have a choice of Mijas apartments for sale and you can make good money from the tourist boom by buying one and renting it out for most of the year, except when you want to enjoy the beauty of this pretty town for yourself.
